New Yarn – Bettaknit Raffia

We have had a restock of fun plant fibres to get us in the mood for spring. Amongst that are two new to us yarns from Bettaknit. Raffia and Hemp Cotton. I’m starting with the Bettaknit Raffia so let’s take a look.

Bettakit Raffia is a 100% paper yarn. This natural fibre is biodegradable but resistant and makes a great vegan alternative to animal fibres. It is created from paper (wood cellulose) that is pulped down and formed into long strips, this means that the finished yarn is uniform and even but still retains a natural feel. Even though it is lightweight and made of paper it still has strength, it is also water-repellant and if gets splashed, it dries fast. A perfect yarn for crafting summer accessories and homewares as it can be quite structural if you go for a tight gauge. I’m thinking it’s the perfect yarn for crocheting so grab your hook and let’s take a look at some projects.

Cambodia Hat (link to Ravelry) by Susanne Müller. I can’t write a blog post about crocheted raffia projects without starting with a bucket hat. Crocheted from the top in one piece to the brim. A simple but classic shape and perfect for a sunny day at the beach.

Crossbody Bags & Clutch (link to designers website) by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas. The simplicity of this bag makes it rather elegant. It is available in three different sizes: small (pictured here), large and as a clutch shape. Finished off with a button and loop closure and a long narrow but sturdy handle that is tied to the bag. Have fun with a two tone look or keep it simple in one colour.

Raffia Selawik Basket (link to Ravelry) by Ozetta : Hailey Smedley. Raffia makes the idea yarn for home accessories like baskets. Its structural nature and robustness is perfect. Starting from the base and crocheted towards the brim, finished with two minimal handles.

Sun City Bag (link to designers website) by Ksenia Naidyon. I like the playful shape of this bag. Much more interesting than a rectangle. Two circular shapes are joined on the sides with a panel to give depth. It’s finished with a fun tassel which I think looks great in raffia combined with a little bit of scrap yarn.

Devon Hat (link to Ravelry) by Weiyan Huang. I like the Fedora style of this crochet hat which starts from the top and is worked to the brim. It’s all about the details with this design and it’s even finished with a ribbon.

Luna Belt Bag by Ksenia Naidyon. This belt bag is by the same designer who designed the round bag above. I was really drawn to its clutch/bumbag hybrid style. Designed to slide on to your favourite belt.

French Market Bag (link to designers website) by PetiteKnit. Ok I have included a bit of knitting in here. This textured bag is knit from the bottom up and is lined as well as being finished with smart leather straps.
