New Yarn – Twisted Ambitions Yarn: Sweet Sock

A collection of inspiring new yarns have arrived at Knit With Attitude. Twisted Ambitions Yarns from American hand dyer Ross Taylor. Bright neons, soft neons, electrifying speckles that all have a glow of positivity that will rub off onto your knitting making them a pleasure to knit, wear and enjoy.

These colours will blow you away. They have real depth and character to them and show a mastery and confidence in Ross’ dyeing skills. It’s a pleasure to introduce a new hand dyer to the shop and especially one that is so colourful. Established in 2021 Twisted Ambitions Yarn has quickly become known as a yarn brand with bright, fun and popping colour combos.

Ross began his fibre story in 2008 with the desire to replace a lost hat. Sourcing yarn, hooks and with YouTube videos to hand he crocheted himself a new beanie. After a couple of years he was buying more yarn and needles and has been knitting ever since. His dyeing journey began some years later wanting to dye yarn for his own projects. Twisted Ambitions Yarn developed from this a passionate love of colour and love of hand dyeing. Now Ross plays with colour all day bringing us beautiful, inspiring and uplifting yarns as well as knitting and also designing. All with the motto of ‘Wicked Sweet Style’.

The yarn base we have introduced is Sweet Sock in 22 colours. Sweet Sock is a 75% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon, 4ply yarn. This high twist sock yarn has a smooth finish making it wonderfully soft but also strong. The fibres are all sourced from South America and are mulesing free. They are processed and spun in America ready for dyeing. I really like this smooth sock yarn as it is a versatile yarn for all sorts of projects. A pair of fun socks, soft shawls, sturdy and easy to care for children’s clothes and reliable garments, the possibilities are endless.

For some project inspiration and some colour combos that I am in love with see below.

Hip N’ Slip Hat (link to Ravelry) by Ross Taylor. This simple beanie hat can be knit with two strands of Sweet Sock held together. Using slip stitches to create texture it has a very pleasing set of crown decreases. Worked from the brim which is knit long so that it can fold up and be extra cosy.

My favourite colour of the whole range is Freshly Squeezed closely followed by Babyon. I love the pale neon intensity Freshly Squeezed has. It is pale but still has depth, with hints of orange and pink. Babylon has a slightly more intense orange and pink base but it is speckled with dark blues, reds and fuchsias. I would knit this with a strand of Freshly Squeezed and Babylon for the brim and the rest I would use two strands of Freshly Squeezed.

Chevron Shenanigans (link to Ravelry) by Stephen West. I had to include a gradient project in the mix as there are so many lovely colour combos to be had. This top down shawl is knit in garter stitch and features short rows with chevrons to create a smart asymmetric shape.

This shawl only needs five colours but I’m really drawn to these six here. I’m feeling the warm colours today and this combo of Amber, Cheer Up, Freshly Squeezed, Pearadise and Honey has me dreaming.

Stria (link to Ravelry) by Andrea Mowry. Andrea Mowry has a talent for combining beautifully simple textures in multi colour projects. This top down jumper features slip stitch stripes all knit seamlessly.

I’m loving this colour combination of Born This Way, Lilac and Limetreuse. I would choose Lilac as my main colour and contrast it with the exciting Limetreuse and the darker variegated Born This Way.

Spectrum (link to Ravelry) by Joji Locatelli. This shawl transitions between two colours in a series of chevron stripes.

I like the subtle contrast of Steel Drum Band and Celebrate Good Times, though these colours definitely are not subtle. Celebrate Good Times is like a paler version of Steel Drum Band and I think in this shawl it will look like the colour is slowly fading away at one end and becoming more saturated at the other.

Rye Light (link to Ravelry) by tincanknits. I couldn’t have a post about a sock yarn without having a sock pattern. A yarn as bright and fun as this deserves the simplest of socks to show off all its colour glory. I love Rye by tincanknits, its simple to knit, done in multiple sizes and free.

I chose the colour Hot Boy Summer here as it would make a great pair of socks. Hot pink, orange and red speckles against a grey background. What’s not to love!
