Knitting season is here, yes really! We maybe having a bit of a heatwave here in London but there is no reason you can’t start planning your autumn projects. Pom pom Issue 46 is here to help you usher in the change of season.

This issue features guest editor Candice English of The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers. Candice English has drawn on her Indigenous roots and life in the American West to bring together a collection of patterns from ten designers. Exploring the hard and soft duality of that land through the spirit of its people. Ten patterns inside feature knitting, crochet and a mix of both. Also a recipe as well as articles. Let’s take a look at the designs along with some yarn pairings from the shelves of Knit With Attitude.

Badger Creek by tincanknits. These cosy mittens featuring an array of cables over the front are worked in the round from the cuff to the fingertips. The palm side is knit in comfortable stocking stitch where as the back of the hand has striking honeycomb and twisted cables. I would knit these in The Fibre Co Lore which would give lovely bouncy cables.

Bunkhouse by Lena Zharichenko. This top down jumper starts at the neck edge. Sleeves are worked flat from the body using short rows and they are joined before continuing on the body in the round. Finally the sleeve cuffs are added. It has a fun construction that creates pleasing vertical stocking stitch rows throughout the whole project. This allows the bobble detail to run seamlessly down the arm from the neck edge. Knit in a two yarns together. The original base is the same fibre as Norne Yarn DK but any smooth DK yarn would work equally well for example Fyberspates Vivacious DK which I would pair with Fyberspates Cumulus.

Chinook Winds by Esti Juango. This highly decorated top is knit in the round from the bottom up with a chevron lace pattern that includes bobbles and is finished with a fringe. Its open texture makes it perfect for the change of season that’s why I would choose a plant fibre blend like &Make DK.

Drover by Natalie Bullock. Ive seen a few times the use of a fluffy yarn on its own as a contrast colour in colourwork and I really like it. Here an alpaca/silk blend is used for the colourwork motif. A geometric yoke that is worked in the round from the top down. Knit in sport weight I would choose John Arbon Yarnadelic Sport and of course our old friend Fyberspates Cumulus for the contrast, though I’m wondering if the Fibre Co Cirro would also work here.

Golden Grass by Elena Solier Jansà. This triangular shawl is worked from the longest edge to the point. I really like this way of working because the closer you get to the end the quicker each row gets, making it very addictive. It’s a textural masterpiece featuring twisted stitches, cables and bobbles. A yarn that would give crisp definition like Tukuwool DK would work well here.

Prairie Skies by Imke von nathusius. This design utilises both knitting and crochet. It starts with granny squares that are used in a sophisticated and understated way. These are sewn together and then stitches are picked up to knit the body. I love that it’s all done in one colour and uses two crafts. It’s made in Garthenor No 3.

Rising Sun by Sandy Jones. The flap for this bag is made from separate motifs which are then joined together and added to the crochet body. I particular like the fringe it adds a bit of flair. A sturdy yarn would be a good choice for this, something like Quince & Co Willet.

Starflight by Allison Lutes. I love colourwork socks, they have become one of my favourite things to knit. These are great with their quilt inspired design they also have a slight texture that runs along the length of the foot. Knit from the top down with a heel flap construction. Length can be adjusted quite easily with this design. I would go for the Fibre Co Amble and Amble Minis for the contrast. It is one of my favourite sock yarns. So soft and great for colourwork.

Ts’aa’ by leeleeyazz. These cuff down socks also feature a graphic colourwork design. With a heel flap construction and contrast toes. I would choose a mixture of Twisted Ambitions Sweet Sock for the main colour and then two colours of Coopknits Socks Yeah for the smaller quantities.

Yearling by Lindsey Fowler. Starting from with the double layer brim this hat features a contrast colour slip stitch design. The contrast colour is worked in vertical stripes up to the crown along with a slipped stitch detail in the main colour which I really like. It plays well in a subtle way against the contrast colour. It also looks nice as it travels up and is decreased at the top. I would pair Fyberspates Vicarious DK with the marled Riverknits Chimera.
