Yarn Pairings for Pompom Issue 41

Pompom is 10 and this is their celebration Issue! Issue 41 marks their 10th birthday and there are 13 designs inside for all weathers. Knitting, crochet, this issue has you covered.

Issue 41 is a special Issue not only because of Pompom’s 10th anniversary but the magazine has had a redesign. This larger format has bigger photographs and more room for patterns while still keeping with Pompom’s characterful style. The theme for this issue is designs for warm and cool climes, hence the double cover. With one half of the magazine dedicated to the warm patterns and the other half the cool. Designers featured are: Isa Catepillán, Sari Nordlund, Inyoung Kim, Marie Régnier, Gina Fama Röckenwagner, Dawn Henderson, Amalia Sieber, Xandy Peters, Sylvia Watts-cherry, Kiyomi + Sachiko Burgin, James N Watts and Ainur Berkimbayeva. Of course there is the usual recipe and articles to add to the mix.

Alumina by Inyoung Kim. This cheery checkerboard crochet shawl is worked from the wide edge to the point, as a symmetrical triangle. The design is made up of half circles and rhombuses which creates a fun interplay of texture. I would choose a combination of Norne Yarn Fingering. Meterage needed: Yarn A: 609m / 665yds, Yarn B: 479m / 523yds, Yarn C: 54m / 58yds of fingering-weight yarn

Chōcho Hat and Mitts by Kiyomi Burgin. The charming stranded colourwork design of little bow tie motifs across this hat and mitts give them a celebration feel. I think John Arbon Yarnadelic would look great with these colourwork shapes. Finished hand circumference: 18 (21, 24)cm /  7 (8¼, 9½)” – to be worn with 0 ease
Meterage needed for mitts: Yarn A: approx. 44 (50, 57)m / 48 (55, 62)yds, Yarn B: approx. 125 (152, 180)m / 137 (166, 197)yds. Finished head circumference: 49.5 (55, 58.5)cm / 19½ (21½, 23)” – to be worn with approx. 2.5-5cm / 1-2″ negative ease
Meterage needed for hat: Yarn A: approx. 175 (190, 210)m / 190 (210, 230)yds, Yarn B: approx. 70 (75, 80)m / 75 (80, 85)yds (including yarn for pompom).

Decima by Isa Catepillán. This practical multifunctional crochet bag looks great slung across your shoulder with a long strap. The flap is actually an extension of the bag itself and incorporates handle holes for multiple ways of carrying. Made from a double layer bottom section that is joined together by the top section. Crochet in a DK linen and I think you would want the strength of linen here, so I would use Vaxbo Lingarn but hold a few strands together to get the gauge you need. Meterage needed (x2 if holding strands together): Yarn A: Approx. 314m / 343yds, Yarn B: Approx. 303m / 331yds, Yarn C: Approx. 160m / 175yds.

Euphorium by Dawn Henderson. These quirky socks are like nothing I have seen before. They have the slouchy sock look but that slouch is mohair! Cute and cosy these these would make perfect indulgent house socks. Worked from the top down starting with a rolled top in 4ply and then moving down to a lace weight mohair section. The foot is then finished off in the 4ply. A winning combination would be Coopknits Socks Yeah and Fybersptes Cumulus. Finished foot circumference: 20.5 (22, 26)cm / 8 (8¾, 10¼)” Meterage needed: Yarn A: approx 182 (220, 290)m / 200 (240, 316)yds, Yarn B: approx 210 (300, 360)m / 230 (327, 392)yds.

Floribunda by Gina Fama Röckenwagner. I love the laid back vibes of this summery crochet top. Made from crochet panels that are stitched together. I could see this being a good project for leftovers. Also Nua Sport a linen and wool blend would add a slightly more rustic woollen note.
Finished chest circumference: 89 (96.5, 106.5, 117, 127, 137, 147.5, 157.5, 167.5)cm / 35 (38, 42, 46, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66)” – to be worn with 10-15cm / 4-6″ positive ease. Meterage needed: Yarn A: 99 (110, 122, 136, 150, 165, 182, 200, 219)m / 108 (120, 133, 148, 164, 180, 198, 218, 239)yds, Yarn B: 113 (125, 139, 154, 170, 186, 207, 227, 249)m / 123 (136, 151, 168, 186, 205, 226, 248, 273)yds, Yarn C: 156 (173,193, 214, 237, 261, 288, 316, 364)m / 170 (189, 210, 233, 259, 285, 314, 345, 379)yds, Yarn D: 424 (471, 572, 524, 645, 710, 781, 859, 945)m / 463 (514, 572, 635, 705, 776, 854, 939, 1033)yds, Yarn E: 107 (118, 131, 146, 161, 178, 196, 215, 237)m / 116 (129, 143, 159, 177, 194, 214, 235, 259)yds.

Keswick by Xandy Peters. This design has such fun summer gingham vibes, reminding me of picnic blankets. Using a mohair throughout, other colours in a sturdier yarn are marled in an intarsia like way to create stripes. For the lace I would go for Fybersptes Cumulus. There are so many possible options but I think the silky glisten of Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply would look super special paired with the Cumulus. Meterage needed: Yarn A: approx 1257m / 1377yds, Yarn B: approx 366m / 400yds, Yarn C: approx 366m / 400yds, Yarn D: approx 366m / 400yds, Yarn E: approx 183m / 200yds.

Lackadaisical by Amalia Sieber. These oh so cheery fingerless mittens are a great thing to have in your bag if things take a chilly turn in spring. An all over colourwork design that has an intriguing knot stitch texture. They look fun to knit as well as wear. I would try Garthenor Preseli for these, such fun colours and good for colourwork. Finished hand circumference: 18 (19, 20.5, 21.5)cm / 7 (7½, 8, 8½)” – to be worn with zero ease
Meterage needed: Yarn A: approx. 115 (123, 140, 148)m / 126 (135, 153, 162)yds,Yarn B: approx. 79 (85, 96, 102)m / 86 (93, 105, 111) yds.

Lateralis by Ainur Berkimbayeva. These sideways garter stitch socks look like a funky knit. Worked flat with increases and decreases to create the heel. They are then seamed together from the provisional cast on. The only bits worked in the round are the toes and cuffs that are worked at the end. The soft and inviting Fibre Co Amble would be my choice here. Finished foot circumference: 19 (21.5, 24.5)cm / 7½ (8½, 9¾)” – to be worn with 1-2.5cm / ½-1″ negative ease
Meterage needed: Yarn A: approx. 110 (137, 174)m / 120 (150, 190) yds, Yarn B: approx. 142 (178, 224)m / 155 (195, 245) yds.

Paragon by Sylvia Watts-Cherry. Sylvia’s eye for pattern is unmatched. Her bold pattern repeats create such impact and this design is no exception. Worked in pieces and seamed with set in sleeves. This is just crying out for the jewel like colours of Fyberspates Vivacious DK. Finished chest circumference: 94.5 (102, 118, 122, 125.5, 142, 149, 165.5, 172.5)cm / 37¼ (40¼, 46½, 48, 49½, 56, 58¾, 65¼, 68)” – to be worn with 3.5-16.5cm / 1½-6½” positive ease
Meterage needed: Yarn A: approx. 523 (550, 627, 641, 665, 726, 773, 834, 860)m / 573 (603, 687, 703, 729, 796, 847, 914, 943)yds, Yarn B: approx. 433 (479, 553, 588, 639, 711, 766, 846, 915)m / 474 (525, 606, 645, 700, 779, 840, 928, 1003)yds, Yarn C: approx. 155 (171, 198, 210, 228, 254, 274, 302, 327)m / 169 (187, 216, 230, 250, 278, 299, 331, 358)yds, Yarn D: approx. 228 (253, 292, 311, 337, 375, 404, 447, 483)m / 251 (278, 321, 342, 371, 413, 445, 491, 531)yds, Yarn E: approx. 113 (125, 145, 154, 167, 186, 200, 221, 239)m / 124 (137, 158, 169, 183, 204, 220, 242, 262)yds.

Purppura by Sari Nordlund. Texture, texture, texture sums up this jumper. A deep yoke of bobbles and lace create real impact. Worked from the top down in the round. The rich colours are making me think instantly of Norne Yarn DK. Finished chest circumference: 81 (91.5, 101, 111.5, 121, 131.5, 141, 151.5, 161) cm / 32 (36, 39¾, 44, 47¾, 51¾, 55½, 59¾, 63.)” – to be worn with 6cm / 2¼” of positive ease. Meterage needed: Approx. 765 (840, 925, 1020, 1120, 1235, 1355, 1490, 1640)m / 835 (920, 1010, 1115, 1225, 1345, 1480, 1630, 1790)yds.

Reduplicate Top and Shorts by Marie Régnier. Ooh this is a fun matching pair, the textured stitches are mesmerising. They look like Celtic knots. Both the shorts and the top are worked seamlessly from the top down. The shorts even have pockets and are finished with an i-cord belt. Nua Sport would be my choice. Finished chest circumference for top: 87.5 (98, 105.5, 118, 129.5, 139.5, 152, 162.5)cm / 34½ (38½, 41½, 46½, 51, 55, 59½, 64)” – to be worn with 10cm / 4″ positive ease
Meterage needed: Approx. 611 (735, 798, 921, 1017, 1125, 1251, 1367)m / 669 (803, 872, 1006, 1112, 1230, 1368, 1494)yds.
Finished hip circumference for shorts: 103 (106.5, 112, 119.5, 122, 129.5, 134.5, 138.5)cm / 40½ (42, 44, 47, 48, 51, 53, 54½)” – to be worn with 10cm / 4″ positive ease at the hips.
Yardage: Approx 826 (865, 922, 993, 1029, 1091, 1154, 1199)m / 903 (945, 1008, 1086, 1125, 1194, 1292, 1311)yds.

Streamers by James N Watts. This stripey jumper is worked flat from side to side in pieces that are then seamed. A simple drop shoulder shape that looks really nice with stripes as they bend across the shoulder. I would love to do this in Hillesvåg Tinde, I think I’m planning for winter! Finished chest circumference: 101.5 (115, 122, 135, 142, 155.5, 162.5, 176, 183)cm / 40 (45¼, 48, 53¼, 56, 61¼, 64, 69¼, 72)” – to be worn with 20-30cm / 8-12″ positive ease
