Stripes! They are everywhere, from nature to manmade architecture. Providing endless inspiration for art, design, and of course knitwear. Veera Välimäki’s book is a celebration of all those stripes and the forms they can take. These are realised in a group of knitted garments and accessories with a focus on simple and clean lines and modern details.

Inside you will find twenty designs which will have you covered in stripes from head to toe. From big bold striped blocks to delicate garter ridges. Creating classic designs with plenty of opportunity for interesting colour play. So lets take a closer look inside and I’ll recommend some yarn pairings from Knit With Attitude.

Kyllikki – A simple, easy to wear cardigan is a wardrobe staple. Worked from the top down and with drop shoulders, a relaxed shape perfect for everyday wear. The button band is worked at the end and attached to the body as you knit, creating a neat look with the button band stitches in line with the main body. Try this in Garthenor Preseli for a soft and cosy knit with plenty of colour stripe opportunities.

Kaarna – I love the bold combination of the wide mirrored stripes in this shawl. It has a fun construction, first one side is knitted and then the second side is knitted and joined to the first as you knit. This creates a neat and more elastic seam and no use of intarsia. I would pick two gorgeous colours of G-uld No.4.

Maire – This long dress with generous ease is perfect for hunkering down on winter days. With an interesting shoulder construction that looks halfway between a raglan and a drop shoulder. Choose a cosy yarn like The Fibre Co Cumbria Worsted.

Varpu – This triangle shaped shawl has some of Vera’s classic style, combining blocks of colour with two colour brioche for simple but effective design. Colour blocks are created with short rows framed with bands of brioche for vertical stripes. I would love to see this in some nice combinations of John Arbon Yarnadelic.

Venny – The round yoke of this jumper creates pleasing arched stripes that gently straighten further down the body. A simple use of two colours which is edged in a lace border at the hem. Try The Fibre Co Lore.

Ellen – Celebrate the joy of easy garter stitch in the oversized scarf. Worked in a combination of short rows and stripes to create a dynamic design. Knitted in something luxury would be fun, like Norne Yarn Merino Silk Yak DK.

Anni – Simply striped toe up knee high socks for some mindless knitting. Made quirky by reversing the colours between the two. Try Triskelion Mama Qucha Sock or Coopknits Socks Yeah 4ply.

Helle – This sleeveless top is worked sideways for easy vertical stripes. I like the pleats along the front that give it an informal summery feel. A great top for summer holidays or drinking iced tea in the garden. Try Triskelion Mona 4ply.

Maija – This twist on a sailors top has a nice open neck for a relaxed and comfy fit. Shoulders are worked first as flat pieces and then picked up to be worked in the round. I would try this in Stolen Stitches Nua, with its touch of linen, adding to the summery vibe of this top.

Alli – A simple crescent shaped shawl with panels of textural stitches created with twisted rib. Short rows add a bit of depth and shape to the garter stitch sections. I would luxuriate in a gorgeous fibre like Norne Yarn Merino/Silk/Yak Singles.

Maria – This shawl is knit up of a combination of triangles that are built up as you go. Changing directions in striped and plain garter stitch. Knit in G-uld No.4.

Käpy – This interesting cardigan combines elements of a shawl for a relaxed open fit. The elegant lace panel is worked first and then stitches picked up to knit the stripes. Sleeves are then worked in the round from the body. It might be fun to try this in the Nomadnoos Dry Desert Camel or Smooth Sartuul Sheep.

Ida Beanie and Cowl – Stripes in their simplest form when knit in fun contrasting colours can really make a design. This matching set features bold defined stripes with a little bit of lace in the cowl. Choose some fun colours to really make this design stand out. Fyberspates Vivacious DK or John Arbon Knit by Numbers DK would both work.

Minna – Rippling and undulating brioche stitch echoes the ripples of water. Using increases and decreases to create fun textural curves. I would use a yarn that would give nice crips definition like Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply.

Kaisla – A linen dress is an ideal summer garment. Light and airy and an easy to care for fabric. This one is worked from the top down with a simple neckline and sleeve edge finished with an i-cord. Växbo Lin Lingarn would be idea for this.

Tyven – Knit with a similar construction to the other shawls in the book with diagonal stripes that go in different directions. This makes the knitting fun but also has fun results. I would try a combination of Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply and Cumulus.

Elin – This minimal t-shirt is worked from the top down and matches perfectly with the Kaarna shawl. Simply shaped for a light easy to wear top. I would knit it in the same G-uld No.4.

Helene – Worked from the top down this boxy summer top has a relaxed fit, perfect for warmer months. I would choose an easy to care for yarn like Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply, soft enough to be worn against the skin.

Aino – I like the quirky two tone ribbing on this simple cardigan. It adds a bit of character to a simple shape. Worked from the top down in one piece with raglan shaping. I would choose The Fibre Co Cumbria Worsted.
