A Year Long Knit-A-Long – Junction Road

2021 is the Knit With Attitude Year Long Knit A Long! Every month we celebrate a pattern from the Knit With Attitude Anniversary Collection. To read all about it see the introductory blog post.

Next up in the Year Long Knit Along is Junction Road by Natalie Selles. Junction Road is an interestingly structured shawl which starts with a large central panel that then extends out either side. A pleasing combination of 4ply Merino yarn and fluffy lace weight alpaca.

Natalie says about the design:

‘There are so many ways to design a shawl, and yet it sometimes feels like they’ve all been done before! I had this construction idea that I hadn’t seen before for a while so I was delighted to have a chance to work it out properly for this book.

It is worked by making a centre panel, then the sides are each knit outwards. This creates a

shape that is shallow in the front, but with long enough arms to wrap around without creating too much bulk.

Attitude can mean challenging ideas that seem unmoving and widely accepted in order to create change. Similarly this shawl challenges the usual ways of making a triangle shawl by turning it upside down and sideways.’

Junction Road uses two skeins of Fyberspates Vivacious 4ply and three balls of Fyberspates Cumulus. The Cumulus adds a light fluffy texture to the bands of more solid Vivacious. Together they create such a soft combination.

Of course you can get creative with your own colour combos but to make life easier for you we have put these yarn kits together.

Original – Fyberspates 4ply in Blush and Strawberry. Fyberspates Cumulus in Raindrop. Natalie’s original combination combines two shades of pink with the soft chalky lilac Raindrop.

Oasis – Fyberspates 4ply in Lundy Island and Burnished. Fyberspates Cumulus in Teal. The metallic tones of Lundy Island sits pleasingly next to the brighter colours of Burnished and Teal which really pop.

Artic – Fyberspates 4ply in Shoreline and Denim. Fyberspates Cumulus in Onyx. Complimentary blues work together in this cooling combination. There is still enough contrast between them to highlight the stripes in a more subtle way.

Berries – Fyberspates 4ply in Spiced Plum and Tweed Imps. Fyberspates Cumulus in Gloaming. Similar to the blues this combination works with complimentary reds and purples. The variegated Tweed imps picking up the colours from both the Spiced Plum and Gloaming.
