As soon as talk of Spring starts I know these short winter days are slowly coming to an end. Laine’s Spring 2026 issue 28 is just around the corner. Publication day is the 5th March.

Laine 28 is titled Open Water and takes you on a sunny boat trip on the Baltic Sea. Photographed on the islands of Karhusaari and Kivisaari outside Helsinki with sun-warmed cliffs, rocky beaches and balmy pine forests. Inside there are four jumpers, two cardigans, three T-shirts, two tops, a vest, two shawls and a pair of socks. Designers featured are: Eun Mi Ahn, Fiona Alice, Autumn Buggs, Nicola Furey, Maria Gomes, Olivia Glennon, Anna Hechtman, Meiju Kallio, Pauliina Leisti, Lisa Meissner, Klara Nilsson, Sara Ottosson, Sanni Pauliina, Marie Régnier and Cata Rubke.
Let’s take a look at the designs inside and I’ll recommend some yarn pairings.

Artist by Pauliina Leisti. This relaxed and flowy drop sholder short sleeve top has got springtime written all over it. Knit from the top down starting with flat pieces that are worked down from the shoulder and then joined in the round at the underarm. A simple all over waffle texture adds a touch of detail to this simple shape. It is knit in a 4ply silk yarn held double to get a DK weight. I think the soft and flowing Scrumptious 4ply would be a great choice. This top is knit on 3.5mm needles so I’m wondering because Scrumptious is on the plump side of a 4ply it might work with just one strand for a lighter version. Might be worth an experimental swatch.

Clara by Cata Rubke. This vest top is ideal for summer days. Twisted rib details sit along the armhole edges and flow down the side seams and are also a feature of the split hem. This top opens at the back and features a statement buttonband on the reverse. It’s knit in a sport weight yarn so I would try the summery cotton blend of Pickles Sommerull.

Cloud Tee by Klara Nilsson. This fun t-shirt style top makes bold use of intarsia. Knit flat in pieces. Due to the way the clouds sit you only work intarsia on the top sections to create the iconic cartoony cloud shape. This is knit in a DK cotton and wool blend that has quite a generous meterage, also on 3.5mm needles. I’m wondering id you could get away with the slightly lighter Hey Mama Wolf Mokosh, It’s quite plump and the colour range is perfect.

Cockle by Autumn Buggs. This ribbed tabard is great for layering or adding a colour feature to a simple outfit. Knit flat and seamed at the shoulders and finished with simple i-cord ties. Knit in a sport weight I think the wool and cotton blend of Pickles Sommerull would be ideal

Filigree by Maria Gomes. This intriguing jumper combines a light and airy yarn with a structured stitch. The result is very effective. A criss cross trellis of cables run across the whole design which is knit in the round from the top down. Slip stitches are also incorporated to give depth. Our go to fluffy lace is always Fyberspates Cumulus. The brushed alpaca being super soft and in my opinion nicer than mohair.

Flickflauder by Lisa Meissner. Little scarves are sure having a moment and I really like them. Quick to knit and great for leftovers. This one has a fun staggered triangle shape. This creates a fun layering effect when it’s folded in half. There are two sizes and pictured here is the small one. Both take hardly any yarn at all so I would totally stash dive, though maybe I would just get a few small cards of Gleem Lace Embroidery Thread to throw in a few pops.

Honeymist by Meiju Kallio. This t-shirt is knit seamlessly from the top down. The simple shape and minimal look has a feature design detail with the cables that snake from the neckline, across the shoulders and down the top of the short sleeves. Knit in a worsted weight linen blend I’m wondering if the blend of nettle and merino that is Woven Beyond Allo would be a nice choice.

If You Believe by Sanni Pauliina. This relaxed open cardigan has an all over texture mixed with twisted stitches. With a smart construction starting from the top and working down. The sleeves are worked in the round from the body with no shaping, keeping them relaxed and open making this a great piece to layer up. Knit in a 4ply wool I am being draw to Hillesvåg Sølje for this.

Myriade by Marie Régnier. This relaxed jumper has a gentle lace texture along the sides of the body which adds a bit of style to the simple shape. Wide open sleeves that cinch in at the cuff also add to the light and airy feel. It is knit in a lambswool so I think Pickles Pure Wool would be a good choice.

Only Lovers Left by Sara Ottosson. There are some really smart details in this design that I really like. The edgings are neat garter stitch with gives a nice contrast to the waffle texture. A split hem and button neckline and cuffs give it the feel of a shirt. This top is knit in a fine wool and I’m wondering if Garthenor Snowdonia would work.

Picnic by Anna Hechtman. This long gently tapered shawl is knit from end to end. It has a characterful basketweave texture that covers the entire design apart from a large cable band that runs down the entire length. I think this would look great knit in London Wool.

Pinehurst by Fiona Alice. This jacket style cardigan has a thick button band and high collar. Starting at the top and initially knit in pieces before joining the back and fronts to continue knitting the rest of the body. The sleeves are knit in the round. Knit from two strands of a blown yarn held together on 7mm. I’m wondering if the thicker Pickles Cozy on its own would be a good choice.

Seafoam Cables by Olivia Glennon. This cosy jumper features an all over tightly twisted cable repeat. The cable repeat will be simple to remember but they are really effective. Sitting between bands of stocking stitch. I particularly like the rolled edges at the neck, wrist and hem. It echoes the plump rolled look of the cables. It is knit in a shetland wool so I am toying between Pickles Pure Wool or Hillesvåg Sølje.

Springtide by Nicola Furey. These top down socks feature a classic heel flap and gusset construction. A cute colourwork design is worked around the leg and repeated when you get to the toe. Choose the go to Socks Yeah! for these.

Vacilando by Eun Mi Ahn. I like the simple shape of this waistcoat that is knit in pieces and seamed together. The simplicity allows for the basketweave texture to really shine. I also like that there is no conventional button band but the buttons are set within the main fabric. Finally a picot edging adds the finishing touch. It’s knit in a cotton blend worsted weight yarn but because we have just got it in I think that Hey Mama Wolf Beara would be a fun choice.
