Falling Leaves by Birkebolla

Designer Feature – Birkebolla Strikk

We have become entranced by the mesmerising colourwork socks of Jorun (Birkebolla Strikk). If you are not a sock knitter these sure are the socks to tempt you.

Heavily ornate colourwork designs that feature everything from the traditional to the modern, the geometric to the flowing and the graphic to the cutesy. Each design can be knit in a combination of two or three colours. Using two colours for the main pattern and the option of adding in contrast toes, heels and cuffs. These perfect pocket projects are great for indulging in small colourwork designs without having to think about a whole garment. They are also great to really challenge yourself with an intricate design worked over a manageable area.

The socks are worked from the top down starting with the ribbed cuff. They then move into the charted colourwork design. Once this is worked the heel is knit as a heel flap and turn that then moves onto the charted colourwork design for the foot. Finally finished off with the toe. It is recommended to have a larger needle size while working the colourwork design as it has less give than regular stocking stitch owing to the floats.

I would recommend these designs to someone who has knit with colourwork before and is comfortable maintaining an even tension. Then again they are small enough projects to practice your colourwork on. Socks offer the perfect canvas for honing your skills.

We have put together some great kits if you fancy giving these socks a go. They combine some of our favourite sock yarns in two or three colour options. Here are a few of my favourites:
