Is scarf season getting closer? Even if it’s a while off a quick, satisfying and simple project is often a welcome break to the more complicated projects we might be tempted by.
I’m always intrigued to see how far I can get from 100g of yarn not only because it is good for customers in the shop to see how much you can get from one skein its also good to be able to use every last millimetre. So for my simple project I have decided to knit 100g Tjukk and to be honest it’s not really intended to be anything but mere experimentation.
Pickles Tjukk is a really plump, single ply worsted weight yarn. Its plump nature means it has a wide needle size recommendation. Anything from a 4.5mm up to a 6mm. Being able to squish down or squish out depending on what sort of fabric you like. Made from a buttery soft 100% Merino from Peru. It feels so soft and beautiful and knitting it is a joy, I have to say I really enjoyed working with it and 100g gives you 200m / 218yards.
I chose to knit my sample on 6mm needles and cast on with the aim of creating something scarf like. I did this because I think this yarn would make the perfect beginner yarn for creating an easy scarf to get into the rhythm of knitting. I worked in just garter stitch and it is just as squishy as you could imagine. So below I have written out all my details and measurements to give you an idea of how much you would need if you wanted to create your own simple scarf project and I was pleasantly surprised with how far it went.
I used 6mm needles and cast on 40 stitches aiming for a wide sample. I knit until I had used it up and ended up with a scarf 24cm and 80cm long. With this width which is quite generous for a scarf I would say you would only need two skeins for a decent sized cosy scarf.
As it has gone so far I would be confident in saying you could a decent small scarf out of one by sticking with the 6mm needles and casting on just 30 stitches and knitting through ending up with a scarf aprox 19cm wide and 100cm long.
Alternatively if you are thinking blankets you could go for something that is approx 96cm x 160cm which would take 8 skeins. Cast on 160 stitches and keep knitting!
Give this yarn a try, beginner or not and I’m sure you will fall in love.
